WINTER WEATHER UPDATE & PREPAREDNESS
This is a follow-up to the alert sent out earlier this week regarding winter weather. Right now, the strongest chance of wintry precipitation is next weekend (1/11/25), but that forecast has already changed several times. Temperatures are predicted to fall dramatically early next week, dropping into the teens. As we all know, conditions in our mountainous area can change quickly and often be more severe than forecasted, so please be prepared. Below is some guidance and basic tips to help everyone be ready:
· Cats and dogs should not be outdoors for extended times. Temperatures this low can quickly cause their body temperatures to drop, becoming life-threatening. Any outdoor water or canned food will freeze very quickly.
· Make sure your generators have fuel and are in good working order. Snow and ice cause power outages, and the temperature in your home will drop quickly without heat. Propane tanks should be filled. Power outages should be reported directly to Amicalola EMC prior to Public Safety.
· Keep garage doors closed if you have a water heater or water supply lines in the garage.
· Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
· Have at least seven days of water and non-perishable food stored. Think about items that you use daily, and make sure to have several days of them stored for emergency situations. Commonly used items include medications, vitamins, toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, and cleaning supplies. Some suggestions for very useful emergency supplies are batteries, flashlights, battery-powered lanterns, hand warmers, blankets, butane stoves, and portable power stations.
· Improper use of space heaters and heating equipment are a leading cause of housefires. Follow THIS LINK to ensure you are using safe heating practices.
· Email alerts will be provided if Public Safety becomes aware of threatening road conditions. The Bent Tree Infoline at 770-893-2999 will also be updated during extended weather events.
