Public Safety Updates:

GATE ENTRY AND COMMUNITY SAFETY

As everyone likely knows, our team conducts annual audits of vehicles and transponders. During the course of these audits, we have likely deactivated hundreds of transponders for people who no longer have valid community access rights. This has improved community safety and security dramatically. For that reason, we cannot simply assume that any vehicle with a transponder on it belongs here.

We have had several issues lately with residents who have transponders using the inside (non-transponder) lane to attempt to get around a large truck that is blocking the outside lane. We understand it is frustrating to wait and drive behind a large truck on our roads.

However, this practice creates the following problems:

1. Clearing a large vehicle in the outside lane generally requires either its driver or our staff walk to and from the truck. When this is taking place, the inside lane will be shut down for the safety of the involved parties. No vehicles, resident or not, are allowed to enter the gate during that short time.

2. Other than being familiar with someone and recognizing them as a resident, our gate operators have no immediate way to ensure a vehicle on the inside lane has valid access. Therefore, extra steps may need to be taken to confirm valid access rights.

Please understand it is our goal to get residents in as quick as possible, while still maintaining the security of our great community. To facilitate that, we ask residents with valid transponders to use the outside transponder lane unless they need to speak with our gate operator. We work as fast as possible to get big trucks through with minimal obstruction to the outside lane. If an issue arises that causes their clearance process to be extended, we will direct residents to use the inside lane and clear them as quick as possible.

Gaits

Gaits are what you call the strides of a horse.  These gaits are also patterns of the leg movements. Since horses have four legs, they can move their legs in different patterns to create these diverse movements. Horses can walk, trot, canter and gallop. The walk is the slowest pace. The horse will move their head and neck slightly up and down which helps maintain their balance. The trot is a bouncy gait because the horse moves its diagonal legs in unison. The trot is a gait that horses can sustain for a long time. It is considered the working gait. The canter is a controlled gait. It is smooth and faster than a trot, and It is more like a glide. The canter is a three beat gait. Horses cannot sustain the canter for long periods of time. The gallop is a run, and it is the fastest gait. Horses cannot sustain a gallop for more than two miles, hence the length of racetracks. The Trail rides are busiest Friday through Sunday, so for the best selection of dates and times call early or choose Monday through Thursday. Either way, call today to schedule your next ride: (706) 692-6322. See you on the trails!

News from Lake & Wildlife

Uh oh! We missed Wildlife Wednesday... let's enjoy the message from L&W today!

When and where do deer sleep?

Whitetails are crepuscular animals, meaning they move mostly around dawn and dusk. They do most of their bedding during the brightest daylight hours and periodically throughout the night.

Bedding locations are determined by shading, slope and aspect of the ground, wind speed and direction, and proximity to sources of food.  Unless in a bachelor group or tending a doe, bucks typically bed down alone. Does almost always bed in family groups, and each one beds down facing in different directions to watch for danger.

Deer remain alert while they sleep and their head position changes constantly. Sleep is necessary for health and survival, but as a prey species so is the ability to be somewhat alert while sleeping. A typical sleeping bout for a deer includes 30 seconds to a few minutes of dozing, followed by a brief alert period, and then more dozing followed by an alert period. This cycle often lasts for only 30 minutes followed by standing and stretching. Mature bucks will typically bed alone with a thick stand of trees at their backs.
